Matthew Hein is a brand manager, project leader, and instructor. He was born in Seattle, earned his MA in Portland, and now lives in California.

He is the Assistant Buyer and Senior Bookseller at The Book Catapult, where he has also handled off-sites and events. Edelweiss lists the Catapult as America’s top indie seller of his staff picks All My Puny Sorrows, Cooking with Fernet Branca, and Adios, Cowboy.

Among Catapult events, he managed the Sara and Tegan signing for High School and Jac Jamc’s national release for Empty Theatre. At Portland State University, he organized and moderated Writing Center panels featuring Blake Nelson, Jonathan Raymond, and Debra Gwartney. He previously managed readings and musical events at Portland’s X-Ray Cafe including such diverse figures as Le Tigre leader Kathleen Hanna and Voodoo Donuts founder Tres Shannon.

His brand and project management for Four Barrel Coffee included helming social media accounts with 44k followers. He also created non-visual identities for the revamped the De La Paz Coffee imprint, and managed its relaunch. As international accounts manager, he handled wholesale accounts worth $800,000 gross annually. Previously, his stint as PSU Project Manager saw the updating of the Center web site, overhaul of the Center’s computer system, and publication of Ways of Writing, a primer for nontraditional first-year students.

As an instructor, he has worked with middle school special education students, high school seniors, university undergraduates, and lifelong learners. He has taught basic skills, creative nonfiction, academic writing, premodern world literature, victorian literature, and tap dance. He received a nomination for PSU’s Mary H. Cumpston Award for Service to Students.

His writing has won the Wilma Morrison journalism prize for excellence. He was also a finalist for the Oregon Poetry Association’s New Poets Prize. His work has appeared in Propeller Online, Drifting Cry Room, Boneshaker, Oregon Humanities, The Journal of Drama Studies, and Reconstruction. He responds to unsolicited requests and commissions within three working days.

He starred in the Jackson Defa short film One in the Gut, and released the vinyl and digital album In Search of Lost Hein on Jealous Butcher Records. He likes reading, writing, teaching, and organizing… and collecting vintage neckties.
